Surely there is more to life than that endless list of chores and things to check off that to-do list. You sure could use a break to getaway and refresh.

The Scriptures express how God, in His love, desires to draw His believers to Him. He desires that we come away and refresh.

My beloved speaks and says to me, rise up, my love, my fair one, and come away. —Song of Solomon 2:10

A great way to step away to find some intimate time alone with God, in prayer and reading the Bible, is to turn a corner of your home into a spiritual oasis; but where? The truth is that even the most obscure area of your home can be turned into a place where you spend intimate moments in prayer and bible study, even if it means making a special spot for the Bible in the laundry room.

Whether you stay at home or work outside of the home, housework is a dreaded chore, especially the endless mounds of laundry, so the room where you wash and dry dirty clothes is probably the last place you would consider turning into an oasis. However, anywhere you stop and make time for God is a paradise of peace.

Seek the Lord with your whole heart, and you will find him even in the laundry room in the middle of your most mundane task.

You will seek me and find me when you search for me with all of your heart. —Jeremiah 29:13

You don’t have to literally sit in a tiny room that smells like bleach while surrounded by dirty laundry to have a special devotion time alone, but delve into the idea that it actually isn’t such a bad idea to tuck away a well-weathered Bible in every nook and cranny. Start by setting up your own spiritual oasis in a little corner of your home.

Find a cozy little corner or respite complete with a comfy chair and side table. Here’s some helpful tips to setting up your private oasis for bible study:

Create a Comfy Sitting Area

If the room’s space allows for it, put a comfortable chair in one corner. Of course, if you choose the laundry room as your spot, a pile of clean laundry can second as a place to sit.

Calm Your Senses with Relaxing Scents

Wherever you choose to sit quiet with your bible, add some aromatherapy in the form of candles, or diffuse some essential oils. If you are literally in your laundry room, add some essential oils to your load of wash, and allow it to serve as aromatherapy for your quiet time. Lavender is a great one for relieving stress.

Add Some Mood Lighting

Add some lighting that has a dimmer switch, or light a candle. Dim lighting helps to tune out the chaos and other activity around you so you are free to focus on God’s Word and prayer. Of course, if you are actually in your laundry room, don’t light a candle due to the danger of fire.

Surround Your Space with Life

Add a plant to your space, because plants set the environment and encompass the essence of life.

Store Your Bible in a Safe Place

Set up a small table or night stand where you can store your Bible along with a highlighter and some pens to take notes when something you read speaks to you. If your laundry room is your only viable option to where you choose to draw closer to God, tuck your Bible inside a waterproof cover or tote bag to protect it from water, detergents, bleach, and other liquids that could prove hazardous to the pages.

Listen to Peaceful Sounds

Many relaxing oasis spots include the sounds of water. Find a small ceramic waterfall that runs continuously when you turn it on, or buy a sound machine that gives you the option to select running water as a peaceful sound. There is, however, a huge benefit to selecting to read your Bible in the laundry room. With your Bible in the laundry room, you already have the ambiance of water sound built in. All you have to do is run a load of wash.
