Mark Burnett and Roma Downey’s Son of God premieres in theatres today. Believe.com, along with ChristianMingle, hosted a screening in Irvine. Amanda and Vanessa, who many of you have chatted with over the past few weeks, were on hand to check people in and say hello. The first 50 were lucky enough to grab a CD featuring the film score.

For those of you who weren’t there, here’s the inside scoop on the event. (And seriously, come see us next time we are in your neighborhood! It wasn’t the same without you. smiley)

The Set Up

The screening was held at Edward’s Cinema at the Irvine Spectrum Center. Despite the threat of rain, the sun was bright all day in beautiful Orange County, giving those who arrived early the opportunity to catch some Vitamin D while waiting in line. Joe, a man in his seventies wearing a version of an “I Love Jesus” baseball hat, got in line at 2PM. “I didn’t want to miss it,” he said, after graciously thanking Vanessa and Amanda for the soundtrack.

The Movie

The movie, told from the perspective of the Apostle John, didn’t differentiate too much from the Gospel itself. While there’s only so much a film can show in a bit over two hours, the movie captured the story of who Jesus was, the tension-filled political climate, as well as the visceral emotions embodying the people who loved Him.

And hated Him.

Make no mistake about it, Jesus wasn’t a popular person back in his day. His presence threatened to bring down a political empire that was more interested in having a King of monetary power than a king of the people. The film didn’t shy away from the history of the time – from the brutal uprisings of the people to Jesus’ own fluctuating emotions about his position as the Son of God. It did an excellent job portraying the fragile and tenuous feelings of Jesus’s Disciples – men who loved him, but were afraid of Him… afraid of what would happen if they did indeed drop their nets and follow Him.

The Reactions

Rather than simply write about, we thought we’d let some of our ChristianMingle and Believe.com members speak to it themselves.

We hope to see you at an event soon, as well as encourage you to take your family and friends to see this film. Without a doubt, you will walk away with a deep understanding of the life of and following of The Son of God.
