You look into your newborn’s eyes, so small, and as you hold their delicate little body, you realize just how much you and your spouse’s lives will change. The family dynamic has just shifted; it’s no longer just you two waking up, eating breakfast and getting ready for the day ahead. Now, there’s a baby laying in your crib. The beautiful and unending truth about bringing a baby into your home is how it can profoundly strengthen your family dynamic.

Changing For The Better

The word dynamic isn’t describing something that is still, or unchanging, it’s actually describing something that is constantly changing or moving. Like space, the dynamic of the universe is that stars are always pulsating and the planets are always orbiting. In a family, days are always passing by, and the family dynamic can strengthen in a way that is simply extraordinary.

Imagine having your first breakfast with your baby at the kitchen table; as parents, you’re beaming and excited. You’re no longer just holding your spouse’s hand in the morning while praying over your food; your other hand is now grasping your baby’s little fist. Suddenly, the dynamic of prayer has changed. You’re now praying not only over your food, but for another human’s life.

“I prayed for this child, and the Lord has granted me what I asked of him.  So now I give him to the Lord. For his whole life he will be given over to the Lord.” And he worshiped the Lord there.”  —1 Samuel 1:27-28

A family of two has now become a family of three (or more), and the family dynamic strengthens by prayer, by ritual reading of His Word, by depending even more upon the Holy Spirit to direct your lives as parents. You now have to put into action the years you and your spouse talked about having children and what you would do; the dynamic, then, was in words, and now, it’s time to live it out.

“These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts.  Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.  Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads.  Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.”   —Deuteronomy 6:6-9

God’s Guidance For New Parents

Being new parents is a miracle, too. God has entrusted a little life into the hands of a couple that has fully consecrated their lives to the Father, and so God knows that they will depend upon the Father to work in their lives as parents. Will there be arguments? Certainly. Will there be days you forget to do something important? Of course. No one will ever be the perfect parent, but God is the perfect Provider for all our needs and He comes through when we simply forget, or become weak, or lack understanding.

God will fill in the wisdom you think you lack, and He will guide you in the way to take care of your child the best way He knows. That’s drawing strength from the Father, and that is incredibly drawing strength into your new family dynamic. Despite any outward appearances, your family dynamic is running on faith and utter daily dependency upon the Father.

Even though you are new parents, you’re still God’s children, and He will still tend to and love you as He always has. Just as you are tending to your newborn and every single one of their needs, God does the same for you. Just lean into His strength, His peace and His will and your family dynamic will only become stronger. Make your family strong and mighty in the Father.
