Why do you follow Jesus? Bethke is clear that we shouldn’t heed our God like sailors of mythology who tied themselves to mastheads to avoid the siren’s call. That’s nothing akin to religious dogma where on the outside we appear pure out the side (No sex with gorgeous strangers! Two points for us) but we’re dying on the inside. (I’m didn’t do it… but I’m soooo not happy about it. I’m tied to this ship but I’m drowning in temptation) No, by really trusting in Jesus’ instead of ourselves, Jesus’ song can overtake the siren’s song. Jesus can fill us where the lie of addictions cannot.
