Girl Most Likely is an odd film that follows an actress, played by Kristen Wiig, who experiences a breakdown after her career and her relationship fall apart.

The troubled heroine is sent to the hospital to recover and the doctors are only comfortable releasing her into the custody of a family member, her gambling addicted wreck of a mother, played by Annette Bening. When Wiig’s character returns home to New Jersey, she finds a strange man, played by Darren Criss, living in her old room and another strange man, played by Matt Dillon, living with her mother.

This incredibly odd family unit must learn to live together, help each other and love one another. Life never seems to go according to plan and when things go sideways, many times the only place to turn is family and friends.

Other versions of the Bible have a different translation of that verse from Corinthians. They say that “love bears all things” and “endures all things.” That is really the heart of the story in this film. Despite the movie being filled with really strange characters, they ultimate love each other and are there for one another.

Sadly though, this film is not very high on the recommendation list. It doesn’t seem to have much direction. It ultimately feels like a dark comedy, but it never really gets funny. There are a few jokes sprinkled throughout, but this dark comedy seemed to shift into straight drama far too often. If the directors wanted a true drama, then they needed to go with a true drama. On top of all that, Kristen Wiig seemed unable to save the character or the film. She is a talented writer, but she did not write this film, and it shows.

So we, being many, are one body in Christ, and every one members one of another. —Romans 12:5, KJV

Christians can take away another valuable lesson from another mediocre film. Girl Most Likely shows how important it is to be there for one another. As Romans says we are all one in Christ, but we are also individuals.

We all have our own problems and struggles, but we have millions of brothers and sisters in our Christian family to go to when times get hard. And, like Girl Most Likely, many of us are a little odd! But, you know what? That makes our insights and gifts unique and you may find yourself in need of someone a little strange one day. Thank God the world is full of odd ducks!

The most important takeaway to get from this film is that your family members do not need to be blood relatives. They certainly can be, but they don’t have to be. You can find love and support from many different places. God put many people in your lives for that very reason. Humans are social beings by nature and this is why. We need the help, support and love of others to get through life, especially when things seem bleak.

Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things. 1 Corinthians 13:7, KJV

Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the Lord thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest. —Joshua 1:9, KJV
