I recently found a helpful service in the town where I live. You might already know about it but it was kind of new to me – bulk trash pickup.

At other times and in other places in my life, I’ve lived in apartments, condos and townhome communities … all of which had big blue dumpsters and big green recycling bins. If there was something you wanted to get rid of that didn’t fit into either one of those receptacles, you just left it near the dumpster and it magically disappeared.

Even better, if there was some household good you no longer needed, you could sit it at the edge of the road and in just a matter of hours (sometimes minutes) someone would drive by who needed that item. They would load it up into their vehicle and drive off. Of course, you could always take your bulky items directly to the dump but it just seemed much easier to sit them at the road and let someone else help themselves — instant recycling.

So here I find out that you can go online and arrange a specific date for your unwanted or broken items to be picked up from your curbside. I’ve utilized this service twice recently and love it.

I know … my kids would call me a dork …

Anyway, when I took some large packing boxes and an old wicker sofa to the curb this week for pick up, I was struck by how easy it is to get rid of unwanted things in my house.

On the other hand, it often seems much harder to get rid of unwanted things in my heart, mind or life.

But as I looked at that pile on the curb, God reminded me that taking the trash out of my life can indeed be just as easy. I don’t need an appointment. I don’t need to carry it all to the curb for others to see or to pick through. I simply need to give it all up to Him.

God made my life complete when I placed all the pieces before Him. When I cleaned up my act, He gave me a fresh start. Indeed, I’ve kept alert to God’s ways; I haven’t taken God for granted. Every day I review the ways He works, I try not to miss a trick. I feel put back together and I’m watching my step. God rewrote the text of my life when I opened the book of my heart to His eyes.2 Samuel 22:21, MSG

Oh how I pray for the courage to take out the trash every day!
